Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, has rubbished claims that there are plastic rice in circulation in the country.
This week, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) claimed it seized bags of plastic rice and that the alleged importer confirmed that he had already supplied some to markets.
But reacting to the issue on Thursday, the Minister said at the moment, there was no evidence to back claims that plastic rice was in the country.
Mr Adewole noted that preliminary test results reveal there is no evidence backing claims that there was plastic rice in Lagos.
“I have just been briefed by the DG of NAFDAC on plastic rice reports. Preliminary test results reveal there is no evidence backing claims.
“Tests conducted; floating-negative, cooking-normal, odour-normal, colour-off white rice grains, moisture-13.0, pre-ashing-normal.
“NAFDAC will release detailed findings to public as soon as it concludes investigations. We urge all Nigerians to remain for now,” the Minister wrote on his Twitter page.
