Twenty-Six containers laden with new tyres falsely concealed and imported into the country have been confiscated by the Nigeria Customs Service.
The importer, who is a beneficiary of the customs fast track facility, was accused of abusing the process by falsely declaring paper boards and machinery as things in the containers, but upon inspection, it was discovered that he allegedly lied about it.
Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, has now ordered the immediate seizure of the consignment warning that all falsely declared goods remain confiscated.
Ali lamented that the duty lost on the seized cargoes is more than 116 million naira or $363,000 and vowed that justice will be done.
The incident has already triggered new rules. The Customs management has issued a new set of directives to importers and agents.
