Certificate Forgery: Presidency, Adeosun Remain Silent

By Modupe Gbadeyanka

The presidency is yet to react to a report at the weekend that Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, forged the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate she is presently parading as authentic.

On Saturday, Premium Times reported that the Minister allegedly forged her NYSC exemption certificate.

The newspaper further alleged that the Senate, which screened Mrs Adeosun for the ministerial job in 2015, was aware of this, but decided to use it as tool to blackmail her into releasing money to the parliament.

Since the report was published, Nigerians have been reacting to it, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Minister.

Also, the nation’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a statement on Saturday, called on the President to “immediately” sack the minister.

The party said the scandal was a big mess on the country, expressing worries on the capability of Mrs Adeosun to continue as the nation’s Finance Minister.

But despite these reactions, the Presidency is yet to speak on the matter as well as the Minister.

A check by Business Post on Mrs Adeosun’s official Twitter page showed that as at on Monday afternoon, she was yet to comment on the matter.

Her last reaction was on June 19, 2018, when she wrote on the amount released by the federal government to fund capital projects in the 2017 budget.

Also, on the Twitter page of the Ministry of Finance, Mrs Adeosun was incidentally quoted as reminding directors of companies that the “possession of fake/forged tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs) is an offense.”

On the verified Facebook page of the Nigerian Government (@Aso Rock), no mention on the scandal was made. Instead, the page has a release on the Vice President, Mr Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to the United States for an investment roadshow.
