Nigeria’s Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris, has tasked the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to come up with more scientific ways and means of improving the collection of taxes in the country to enable government to increase its revenue base.

Mr Idris made this call at the Treasury House Abuja, while receiving President and Council members of CITN led by Mr Ikemefuna Edeh, the body’s president.

The AGF also called for a closer collaboration between the Treasury and CITN in order to improve on successes already achieved in the current public finance management, such as Treasury Single Account (TSA), GIFMIS, IPSAS, IPPIS etc being implemented by his office.

Mr Idris further said his office will support professional bodies with ideas on how to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the reforms, pledging continued support of the Treasury to the activities of the institute.

“Given your vast experience in the area of taxation, and the current efforts of the present administration to sure-up the revenue of government from non-oil and mineral sources, it is important for you to bring to bear your experiences in harnessing the huge potential in the area of taxation to improve on the economy,” he said.

Earlier, President of CITN, Mr Ikemefuna Edeh, extolled what he called the “sterling and exemplary leadership of the AGF, which he said has led to “a more transparent and professional management of the nation’s Treasury with integrity.

Mr Edeh assured of the commitment of the institute in helping the Treasury achieve its mandate.
