Mugabe Finally Resigns as President of Zimbabwe

Mr Robert Mugabe has eventually resigned as President of Zimbabwe, reports reaching us from the South African nation reveal.

Speaker of the Zimbabwean parliament, Mr Jacob Mudenda, said on Tuesday afternoon that Mr Mugabe, who has ruled the country since independence in 1980 from Britain, confirmed his resignation in a letter to the parliament.

The legislative arm of government had made an attempt to impeach the embattled Zimbabwean leader after member of his party, ZANU PF, sacked him as their leader.

A letter today from Mr Mugabe said that the decision was voluntary and that he had made it to allow a smooth transfer of power.

This resignation has now put a stop to the impeachment process and brings to an end the 37-year reign of the hero turned villain.

News of Mr Mugabe’s resignation has sparked jubilation in Harare, the nation’s capital, as citizens have stormed the streets to celebrate the news.

Trouble started for the 93-year-old Mr Mugabe when he fired his Vice President, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa, to make way for his wife, Mrs Grace Mugabe, to become the country’s President.

This forced the military to take control of the country’s affairs, making Mrs Mugabe to flee Zimbabwe.
