NNPC Insists on Low-Sulphur Fuel by July

Nothing will change the July 2017 deadline for replacing higher concentration of sulphur in petrol with lower sulphur content, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has maintained.

The state-owned oil firm said it was working tirelessly to beat the deadline.

According to a report by the Nation, parts of the measures being put in place to achieve this is by liaising with reputable environmental protection institutions such as Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as well as the Ministries of Industry and Environment to ensure proper certification of lower-sulphur fuel and enlightening consumers on the benefits to derive from using the product.

In an interview, the Group General Manager of NNPC in charge of Public Affairs Division, Mr Ndu Ughamadu, noted that by changing to lower-sulphur fuel, Nigeria wants to start using fuel that creates less toxic fumes as against the current grade of fuel, which produces black smoke with its attendant environmental hazards for the country.

According to him, the issue of refining and consuming fuel with low sulphur content is a global initiative.

He said in view of this, Nigeria cannot remain to be an exemption.
