All union activities in the seven branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oshodi area of Lagos State have been suspended by the state Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.

Acting Commissioner of Transportation in the state, Mr Anofiu Elegushi, made this announcement on Monday in Ikeja, the state capital.

He explained that this move followed the recent violence that broke out in the area, which led to the death of a chieftain of NURTW in Shogunle area of Oshodi during the local council primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oshodi on May 29, 2017.

Last Monday, a rival group killed one Mr Rasaq Bello, fondly called Hamburger. His death caused pandemonium in the area, leading to a halt in business activities.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, Mr Elegunshi said during the suspension, no member of the NURTW could be allowed to collect tickets or fees from commercial buses.

He said this suspension would be in force until the state government was satisfied that there would not be another breakdown of law and order.

The Commissioner said security operatives in the state have been directed to arrest anyone that disobeys this order.

He also said Mr Ambode’s administration will not allow any group to cause mayhem in the state.
