On Monday, January 5, 2017, Nigeria will join others to mark the World Environmental Day 2017 with the theme ‘Connecting People to Nature.’

As part of activities lined up by the Federal Government to mark the day, there would be a sensitization walk and clean-up exercise on Saturday, June 3, 2017, in Abuja.

Nigerians have been urged to be part of the walk tomorrow to show solidarity for a cleaner environment, especially when the globe was battling with climate change.

On the D-day, there would be photo and art exhibition, public lecture, school debate and quiz competition, tree planting, stakeholders meeting with CSOs, music and lots more.

These events, we gathered, will take place at the Sarius Palmetum Botanical Garden, Ibrahim Babangida Blvd, Maitama Abuja.

Earlier today, the Minister of State for Environment, Mr Ibrahim Usman Jibril, addressed a press conference in Abuja, where he reeled out these activities to mark the World Environment Day 2017 next Monday.

The World Environment Day (WED) occurs every June 5 and it is the United Nation’s principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually.

Each year, WED has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes.
