The presidency has presented to the Senate for screening nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari for the position of National Commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC).

The nominees were presented on Tuesday on behalf of the President by his Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Mr Ita Enang at the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and National Population.

Addressing the Committee chaired by Mr Suleiman Hunkuyi, the President’s aide noted that the nominees have been screened and cleared by the Securities agencies and the National Council of State and been found qualified to hold the position in which they have been nominated.

He pleaded with the Committee to expedite action on the presentation of the report of the screening exercise before plenary.

Mr Enang then introduced the nominees which included Mr Benedict Ukpong, Ms Gloria Fateya Izonfuo, Barr. Kupchi Patricia Ori Iyanya, Dr Haliru Bala and Dr Eyitayo Oyetunji.

In his message, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and National Population, Mr Suleiman Hunkuyi said the duties of the Commissioners are encompassing, daunting and forbearing especially as they are expected to conduct the next census.

Fortunately, according to him, their task is guaranteed within the body of our constitution and the importance of their assignment is reflected in the fact that their appointment has to be confirmed by the Senate.
