The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Germany would be shut down on Monday, October 3, 2016, Business Post has learnt.

This is to commemorate the German Unity Day, which holds in two weeks’ time.

This information was confirmed in a press release issued by the South African Embassy to the Federal Republic of Germany on Friday, September 23, 2016.

It further said also to be shut for that day include the Visa and Consular Services Section.

According to Wikipedia, the German Unity Day is celebrated on October 3 every year as a public holiday.

It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, when the goal of a united Germany that originated in the middle of the 19th century, was fulfilled again.

Therefore, the name addresses neither the re-union nor the union, but the unity of Germany.

The Day of German Unity on October 3 has been the German national holiday since 1990, when the reunification was formally completed.

It is a legal holiday for the Federal Republic of Germany.
