Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has urged the Joint Taskforce Committee on revenue to ensure a total elimination of multiple taxation in the state.

Mr Ortom, who said this on Tuesday during the inauguration of the committee in Makurdi, noted that the issue of multiple taxation had remained one of the major challenges hindering the effective generation of internal revenue in the state.

The Governor said that the committee should also ensure the harmonisation of all taxes.

He said the committee should implement all decisions of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and carry out an effective sensitisation on all tax issues in the state.

Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman, Board of Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Mrs Mimi Orubibi, said that the inauguration was to improve revenue generation.

Mrs Orubibi, who was also the chairman of the committee, disclosed that taxes would henceforth be collected jointly.

She said that accountability and transparency would be seriously adhered to during the sharing of the revenue proceeds.

Mr Orubibi will serve as the chairman of the committee, while all the 23 local government chairmen are members.

A representative of the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Federal Road Safety Corps, Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission will serve as observers.
